Ok some developments since my last blog over a week ago.
I had some more treatment thanks to www.essentialchiropractic.co.uk and www.personaldentalcare.co.uk with the view of taking three more complete rest days. If things settled I was to proceed with caution on the bike and go from there. Come Monday morning (last week) and having had a peaceful few days resting I hopped back on the erg to test the water.
Turns out the water was fine and I cracked on with a high ish intensity 5km piece with no reaction from the back injury. A 30 min session in the weights room on the fixed weight machines proved to be fine too so I looked to take each day as it came and cracked on.
I ended up completing a full weeks training (11 sessions) covering 116km with a ‘nice’ introduction to speed work as the team revs their engines and prepares to race in 5 weeks at Bristol indoor.bristolrowing.co.uk
Now the bad news is unfortunately for me I am struggling like hell with pace. It’s amazing what can happen in 2 and a half weeks of no rowing. My pace is simply tragic. Last week the 3 speed sessions were so so painful, partly because 1) well it is speed work and 2) I went off to fast in all of them and completely over cooked them positive splitting all the way. Not a nice way to do things. The good news though is the stress it is putting on my body due to the ferociousness of the pieces and the intensity has to be causing some big adaptations – I am yet to see that though and today an unbelievably slow 30 min TT piece went in, the slowest of my career to date.
Hopefully I will start to cash in on the speed work in the coming weeks and see some improvements – to be fair something has to happen. It is seriously poor at the moment but what’s important whilst the pace is irrelevant for now, its more about pushing the body and asking it to change.
8x500m’s tomorrow should be a right hoot.
Until then …….
