I ran a session this week in the South West for the The Really Useful Network (The RUN)
Not a talk. Not a motivational speech.
A performance risk briefing.
And one concept landed harder than anything else.
The body budget.
It’s the work from our Warrior Wellness Movement resilience specialist Jamie Turnbull.
Think about your finances for a second.
You wouldn’t spend endlessly without checking your bank balance. You wouldn’t ignore losses. You wouldn’t refuse to top it up.
Yet that’s exactly how most leaders treat their health.
Spend. Spend. Spend.
Very little going back in.
Every day you withdraw.
Early starts. Late finishes. Deadlines. Emails. Responsibility. Technology. Constant notifications. Travel. Poor sleep. Client dinners. Stress you don’t even notice anymore.
Withdrawal after withdrawal.
And we accept it.
We shrug and say:
“I’m just getting older.” “This is just the job.” “It’s just a busy season.”
It isn’t age.
It’s overdraft.
“Most leaders aren’t ageing. They’re simply under-recovered.”
What struck me this week was how many people came up afterwards and said the same thing.
“That makes complete sense.” “I’ve never thought of it like that.” “That’s exactly how it feels.”
Senior leaders. Founders. Operators. People carrying real responsibility.
All quietly running their body budget into the red.
Here’s the risk most people miss.
When your finances run out, you notice immediately.
When your body budget runs out, it’s gradual.
Cognitive fog. Short temper. Poor decisions. Low energy. Back pain. Weight creeping up. Another cold you can’t shake.
Nothing dramatic.
Just slow performance degradation.
“Health rarely collapses overnight. Performance erodes quietly.”
And then we do something else predictable.
We tell ourselves we’ll rest later.
After this quarter. After this project. After this deal. After the holiday.
How many people push and push all year waiting for that one break … Only to arrive exhausted, pick up a cold and spend the first three days trying to remember how to relax?
That isn’t recovery.
That’s burnout showing up late.
I use a simple analogy.
You don’t insure your house during a fire. You insure it beforehand.
Because you recognise the risk.
Health is no different.
Ignoring it and hoping nothing breaks isn’t resilience.
It’s exposure.
“If you only recover when something fails, you’re already too late.”
The uncomfortable truth is this.
The most important asset in any business isn’t strategy, capital or process.
It’s YOU!
Your clarity. Your energy. Your judgement.
If you’re operating at 60% capacity, the business feels it whether you admit it or not.
Momentum slows. Decisions worsen. Teams feel it.
“You are the operating system. When you degrade, everything connected to you degrades.”
Topping up your body budget isn’t complicated.
It’s the basics everyone already knows.
Sleep. Movement. Recovery. Nutrition. Time away from screens. Boundaries. Actual downtime.
Nothing sexy.
Just consistent deposits.
So here’s the question.
What are you doing to protect your body budget, yourself and your business?
Because if you’re only withdrawing, eventually something gives.
