1 minute intervals – Beaten by 1 metre

6 September 2015

I rested up yesterday with one thing on my mind for today – to get sub 1.30.0 for my minute intervals. Today I woke with the same hunger and desire to hit an aggressive set to move forward and hopefully put these to bed for a while knowing I have made some progress and to start moving the distance up to 500’s.

A busy morning demolishing a corrugated iron shed might have taken it out of me slightly, but an afternoon nap in front of the TV and I awoke with the desire to get cracking. A bit of lethargy to shake off, but a short warm up and a few bursts set the nerves running and the adrenaline set ready to go.

I didn’t want to set out too fast, but didn’t want to chase either and with that in mind I hit the first 3 bang on 1.30.0. I would have preferred 1.29.9 or.8 but it was what it was. The 4th and 5th went through a tad quicker seeing a 1.29.5 and a 1.29.8, but I was in a hole and it was getting deeper and deeper. After the 4th I had had enough and was thinking of just coming in any old how to finish the session. At the end of the 5th my arms and legs were so locked up I could barely paddle the minute interval to shift the lactic. My CO2 intolerance continued and I could hardly breathe. I set off on the final 60 seconds knowing something under 1.30.5 would be enough. I limped home in and around that area, all very consistent splits mind, but on checking the monitor at the end it read 1.30.0 – 6.00 minutes – 2000 metres. Damn it!

Missed my target by one metre, but I genuinely gave it absolutely everything. Nothing in the world could have made me get an extra metre today, that was consistent pacing and absolutely maximum effort. Felt awful after too, just couldn’t shift the lactic.

Regardless of the pace [it’s all relative] that was one of my top 10 worst sessions and looking back now how I got passed the 4th rep I’ll never know. Maybe it’s something called tricking your brain that your body is fine. Otherwise known as determination and will power.

6×1 minute [1r] 1.30.0

Cheers champs, until next time.
