The Day I Realised Determination Wasn’t My Greatest Strength – It Was My Biggest Weakness.

3 August 2026

Sometimes the very qualities that make us successful are the same qualities that quietly undermine our health.

For most of my life, I believed determination was my greatest strength.

It got me through Royal Marines training.

It helped me compete internationally in indoor rowing.

It pushed me through difficult periods in professional football.

And it kept me moving forward when life became complicated.

If something was hard, the answer was simple.

Push harder.

Keep going.

Don’t complain.

For a long time, that approach served me well.

Until one day it didn’t.

After years of injuries, I found myself in military rehabilitation.

Like many people who’ve built their identity around being capable, my instinct was to attack the problem.

Train harder.

Recover faster.

Get back to where I was as quickly as possible.

But no matter how determined I was, my body wasn’t interested.

It wasn’t asking me to try harder.

It was asking me to listen.

That was a difficult lesson to learn.

Because I’d always associated slowing down with weakness.

Looking back, I can see that determination had quietly become something else.

Stubbornness.

Instead of helping me, it stopped me asking better questions.

Instead of listening to my body, I argued with it.

Instead of adapting, I kept trying to force the outcome I wanted.

The irony is that the very quality I’d relied on for years had become the thing holding me back.

I see a similar pattern today.

Not just in military veterans or athletes.

In business owners.

Professionals.

Senior leaders.

People who pride themselves on being dependable.

They don’t stop when they’re tired.

They keep going.

They don’t ask for help.

They cope.

They convince themselves they’ll rest when things calm down.

The problem is that life rarely calms down.

So determination fills the gap where recovery should have been.

Eventually, it becomes expensive.

Not because determination is a weakness.

Far from it.

Determination is an extraordinary quality.

But determination without self awareness can become dangerous.

It encourages us to ignore warning signs.

To normalise exhaustion.

To mistake persistence for progress.

That lesson fundamentally shaped the philosophy behind Warrior Wellness Movement.

Health isn’t something to think about once everything else is done.

It’s the foundation that allows everything else to continue.

One chapter in The High Performance Operator explores this idea in much greater depth because it changed not only how I rebuilt my own health but also how I now think about sustainable performance.

If this article has made you pause and reflect, ask yourself one simple question.

Are you relying on determination to solve a problem that actually requires recovery, understanding or a different approach?

If you’re curious about where you currently stand, I’ve created a free 5 minute Capability Debt Score that will help you understand how your health may be affecting your capacity and performance.

You’ll find the link HERE.

And if this way of thinking resonates with you, you’ll find the full story and the wider ideas behind it in The High Performance Operator, available now on Amazon.
