After yesterdays 750’s -Q- put me back in the red today with some 500’s.
Last night the email came through and it seemed like a good idea then “let’s be quite aggressive with this” (referring to the next few days as I attempt to play catch up from all the work I seem to be missing of late). However trudging down to the gym this afternoon speed work was the last thing on my mind.
I had no excuses although I searched for one as I stripped off to warm up. The back was behaving so I told myself to remember how I feel when the back won’t let me play. ‘Today it is letting you so bloody well get a grip and get on with it’.
The warm up was hideous and to be fair I probably should have dropped the pace on the bursts and on the easy sections. I am still chasing the adaptations that speed work offers and at the moment the main problem is the ability to deal with the CO2 which gives the suffocation feeling.
After the warm up I sat and pondered – maybe I shouldn’t be doing another red session just 24 hours after a punishing set of 750’s. I decided to do 1 rep and then assess how I felt. Who was I kidding? I know how it would feel!
8x500m [90r]
The pace was compromised before the session started – I had nothing so took it one step at a time. After the first I told myself to do one more, after the second another and so on and so forth. Every rep the HD demons were out in force and even more so in the short 90 second breaks. The session was utterly hideous, so so uncomfortable. I stopped looking at the screen after a while as the pace was so tragic – without looking probably my slowest for 18 months or so, but the body didn’t know that. The body knew it was under serious pressure and now it must adapt.
Speaking of which it is time to eat and then an early night beckons.
