Back on track – Dealing with the here and now

12 February 2012

Arthur Ashe once said “Success is a journey not a destination” and whilst usually i wouldn’t agree with this one, on this occasion i do.

It’s a bit like saying “it’s the taking part that counts” – in my book, it’s not.

I entered this week knowing i am once again playing catch up after 3 weeks of no training and being behind the curve before that anyway.

I told myself that it is time to work with the here and now. This is where i am and this is what i have got to work with. Deal with it.

So here it went:-

Mon am – 6k UT2 with 10 race pace bursts every 500m (10×10)
Mon pm – 8×1 min AN @ 33+(1 min rest) all 1.33 pace on the nose. Hard graft! No big starts or frantic finishes – kept it constant.

Tue – 4 x 750m @ 32 (3.30 rest) all 1.35.5. Nearly bailed after second one, third came and went some how. Fourth set was hell but recovery was impressive and stayed on the machine and kept on moving. Again went for constant target split.

Thu – 3 x 3500m UT1 pace but HR higher @ 22 (5 min rest) stayed long and strong for 1.48’s

Fri am – Weight training (first session in 4 weeks) DOMS today!
Fri pm – 10k @ 20 UT2 pace 1.54.9 – In the words of Alan Partridge “lovely stuff!”

Sat – 3 x 2k threshold session @ target SPM 26/28/30 (5 min rests). Went 1.44.0, 1.41.9, 1.39.8. SPM ended up 1 under on the target rate but as per the rest of the week, resisted any big finishes and stayed on a constant split.

Interestingly enough my HR was slightly lower at the end of Sat’s 3 x 2k then from when i did it before my 3 week break and it seemed a tad more comfortable from what i remember – you do the math!

A late good luck to all who are racing today.
