Resilience isn’t what you think it is

30 March 2026

Resilience gets thrown around a lot (and in the words of David Brent – “willy nilly.”)

Usually it’s framed as just getting on with it. Pushing through. Holding it together when things get tough.

That’s part of it … ish, but it’s not the full picture.

I’ve seen pressure in a few different environments.

British Olympic Sailing Team. Indoor rowing at three World Championships. Royal Marines service.

Different arenas, same demand. You’re expected to perform when it matters, not when it suits you.

What becomes obvious over time is this.

Some people don’t break because they’re mentally tougher.

They don’t break because they have more capacity.

That capacity comes from somewhere.

It comes from how well they’re sleeping. How well they’re recovering. How they are fuelling. How they are taking care of their body budget. How physically capable they are. How much strain they’re carrying day to day … and more.

You can’t separate that from performance, no matter how much people try to.

You can get away with it for a while.

You can run on caffeine, poor sleep and constant pressure and still deliver.

But you’re not operating at your best. You’re just surviving at a level that feels normal.

“Resilience isn’t about how hard you can push. It’s about how long you can sustain.”

This is where it becomes relevant for leadership.

Because the pressure doesn’t come and go.

It sits there.

Every day.

Responsibility, decisions, people relying on you, things moving quickly and rarely slowing down.

If your health isn’t supporting you, that pressure starts to chip away.

You become more reactive. Less clear. Less consistent.

Communication changes. Decision making tightens. Patience drops.

You don’t suddenly fail. You just operate at a lower level than you should.

That’s not resilience.

That’s erosion.

At Warrior Wellness Movement, this is the gap we address.

Not motivation. Not surface level advice.

We look at what’s sitting underneath your ability to perform.

Because if the foundation isn’t there, resilience becomes guesswork.

“If your health is compromised, your resilience already is.”

So it’s worth asking yourself a couple of things.

Are you genuinely resilient, or just used to being under pressure?

Are you making clear decisions, or just getting through the day?

Are you sustaining performance, or slowly running yourself into the ground?

Because in the environments you operate in, that line is thinner than most people realise.
