The glamour of Indoor Rowing – 6×1 minutes (twice)

29 January 2013

Q- said to me today “Some times you just have to get on with it” and this evening I had to do exactly that.

An interesting morning spent with –Q- and some new sponsors sat around a table in Bournemouth who have expressed an immediate interest in support of my Indoor Rowing campaign and Q-Power.  I went on to spend the entire day at their lab getting tested for numerous appliances and seeing three different specialists.

Details to follow shortly ……

So after an early start and a long day I drove back just in time to do the school run, get dinner sorted, do the odd jobs and look after Mrs O (who is suffering from a stinking cold – needless to say I am keeping my distance) it was time to go training.

I had spent the morning telling the sponsors all about Indoor Rowing and what it involves. What was coming out my mouth this morning actually sounded quite glamorous and heroic.  However, on entering the lonely, dark, dingy, gloomy training room (otherwise known as my garage) this evening, I remembered that it is infact the most unforgiving, unglamorous, brutal and sadistic sport I have ever taken part in.

Tonight’s session was top end interval training and if I could sum it up in one simple phrase I would say ‘It was bloody hard work and pretty unpleasant’.  -Q- asked me this morning how I was feeling, I replied that I wouldn’t really know until I trained.  Answer – felt slightly fatigued, especially in the legs.

Not much to say really.  A 5km warm up with bursts and then set off on 6×1 minute intervals with 1 minute rests. (Private note to JT please note the use of the word ‘off’). The first set was rowed as if it was the only set of 6 followed by a rest period of 15 minutes then yes you guessed it – go again.

Felt pretty sick in between the 2 sets, tried to keep moving by alternating walking around and some light paddling.  In the end got the job done, worked hard and as Q would say ‘training effect achieved’.  You can see where I started to come apart in the 2nd set but managed to hang in until the end.

All in all pretty unpleasant really.
