I want to try and start blogging more as I push for the homeward stretch to home over the coming weeks and then see where we go with training once settled again.
I am currently in peak week of my fist ever strength block of structured periodised lifting. I am playing with the Jim Wendler 5-3-1 system. This is a strength programme where you lift using percentages of 90% of your 1RM.
What I have noticed is [as expected] my posterior chain groups are far more dominant than the pushing, not just in strength, but endurance. So for example, my training partner who is a strength beast, out lifts me by far in terms of raw strength, but when we work at our respective percentages, in the final set [where the programme allows you to lift as many reps as possible] I am hitting far higher numbers. For example on deadlifts he hit 8, I nearly doubled it with 15. I expect my strength to progress well over the course of the programme due to having never done any structured strength training.
Today I made a return to the erg [remember so far in 2015 I have only rowed about a dozen sessions] where I tried a Peak Power test to start with [DF at 200]. Had some initial problems trying to lash the erg to the deck to stop it sliding and found the only place was in the beating sun with no breeze. Disappointed to only find 968 watts and then had a debut on the 100m piece to see what the fuss was all about. Strength and technique a huge factor here for sure. Did 3 and got 14.8 as my best [DF 165]. Was initially disappointed because of the weight training I have been doing and the muscle I have gained, but then had a think about it. I was actually stronger (and heavier) when I was rowing, so actually not to shabby and certainly something to work on.
Finished with what I now call ‘conditioning intervals’ – 4x500m [90r] and got 1.34.7.
Nice to be back with some interval training, I will try and get a couple in each week now [or very soon] and see how it progresses. I am keen to experiment and see how fast I can get them, using strength training as my base and priority and then simply using ‘conditioning intervals’ a couple of times a week on the non lifting days.
Should be fun.
Cheers.
Glad to see you posting. I have no trouble imagining how difficult it is to work out the logistics challenges to maintain training while shipboard. Good for you for finding a specific angle to go after that works in the environment.
Cheers Greg looking forward to some stability very soon.
