My debut as TMWTM – 2015 Devon Championships

21 September 2015

I’ve said it on various other posts, but once again well done and thank you to Sam Blythe at http://fitnessmatters.me.uk/ for the success that was the first Devon Indoor Rowing Championships. This event has great potential to grow in coming years and with everyone’s support and commitment to racing it can grow even more. Plus what a fantastic way to open the Indoor Rowing season – a 5km.

It was an absolute pleasure arriving at an event knowing I was not going to be put through and abyss of pain and darkness, but instead was going to be watching and supporting others as they battled their own demons, this time tackling the lengthy torture that is a 5km time trial. Watching everyone checking themselves into the pain hotel, ranging from 16-24 minutes was special and the support and connection that was witnessed across the board was inspiring.

Commentating on the racing with Jon Goodal and his good humour was a welcome relief and I certainly got myself involved from the first race to the last talking away as people trudged on stroke by stroke. Whether or not they were listening to us or not remains a mystery as they were gulfed in pain from ever increasing lactic acid levels, that I know from experience leaves your lungs wanting to burst through your ribs and pain shooting through every numb muscle in your body from head to toe. The welcome relief was evident as athletes crossed the line and then fought to rid themselves of the machine and move to their place of solitude – usually the floor. The last 1000m in every race was special as I engrossed myself deep with the athletes, in particular those who had paced the race on a knifes edge and just needed that 12th man to lift them through the final stages. I think the excitement in my words were evident in the fastest race of the day as the 2 out front lifted the rate and brought the splits down to some impressive numbers. Not forgetting Clare Busst breaking the British record with a perfectly executed piece and of course Charles Morley racing at the ripe age of 84.

The 500m races were even more spectacular and I found there was no time to think and just had to say what I saw. In particular Collin Leiba smashing his own British record to go under 1.19. After, I was truly exhausted from the day’s events.

Congratulations and commiserations for those meeting or missing their targets. Some truly gutsy performances which left me in awe and motivated to progress with my own plans.

I thoroughly enjoyed the experience and would be delighted doing it again. Thanks to Jon for the top tips and you may see us again in Cardiff should anyone want to listen again.

An array of race videos are available on Facebook thanks to Lloyd Gilby. Just search for Devon Indoor Rowing Championships.

Cheers.
