The Inevitable – Calling time once again

28 October 2015

It was only ever an idea, to be able to race again and to be able to train in a way to make progress and be competitive. But I never bought it to be honest,  like I said, it was just an idea.

I never bought it because only I know how knackered my body is and when in torsion how uncomfortable every living move is. Waking in the night due to discomfort and then feeling pain when turning over should be enough to discourage anyone. I sound like a broken record,  we’ve been here before right?

In every situation there comes an undefying moment. In this instance that moment came last weekend when I couldn’t get in the car without making noises and sporadically stopping making it into a complicated movement. My hip flexor was so painful I couldn’t lift my leg and my spine wouldn’t move into flexion to allow me to bend. My wife looked at me with that look that said it all.

Later we briefly spoke about the subject that we don’t speak about and I actually heard myself for the first time trying to convince myself. The same happened at the chiropractor a few days later. A brief conversation was enough and once again a look that said it all.

Let’s not forget I have had a summer pain free (not rowing) and with an ever increase in range of movement and ability to function, so it doesn’t take a genius to put 2 and 2 together.

To wrap it up, as I opened above, it was just an idea,  so unlike the first time when I called it a day 18 months ago, I am not overly bothered. More relieved as I know good health is just around the corner. In the mean time I’ll continue to fight the good fight.

As always thanks for reading and thanks for following.

  1. I find myself unable to click the “like” button for this post. I was hoping that you had found a way to train that was avoiding the pain, but no. I’m very sorry that you won’t be racing, but crippling yourself to row is not worth it at all. The sport will miss you.

  2. Sorry to hear it Ollie. On the other hand.. there are lots of other (probably less insane) things to do with life, so hopefully you’ll move onto something that’s so good you look back at this and feel lucky to have ‘got out’!
