As the dust settles on the 2013 British Championships I can reflect on what was a mixed event for me.
Firstly a huge congratulations to Andy Jones who won a deserved title in a great race with a tough battle both on and off the erg. The photos below may not like I am gracious in defeat but when you have just finished a maximum effort 2km race it is often hard to compose yourself to stand and walk let alone be thrust on to the podium ready for photos etc.
I had a few personal issues to deal with 18 hours before race time which clearly I struggled with and it showed. I was not in good shape entering the race arena and knew I was in for a tough ride. Andy capitalised well on this and in the third 500m where I thought my recent form would take me through with a push, he held well and infact accelerated leaving me to die a slow death in the final few hundred metres.
I was in quite a poor state crossing the line and with no victory or adrenaline to help me I suffered in silence as the lactic build up drowned me and kicked me whilst I was down. I did however shift it within a few minutes of composure and movement before it was time to stand and applaud the victor with little time to think or react.
6.11.0. Some 3.5 seconds of PB pace from 3 weeks ago and arguably 5-6 seconds of what recent training form would suggest.
That is all I will write in public and with the World Championship less than 10 weeks away we have to push on. We will and have taken the positives away and are currently in pursuit of dealing with any current issues – long term vision remains the goal. This weeks schedule is written and as we say ‘back to business tomorrow’ with a double session.
