A stinking cold but a PB

11 March 2012

Another tricky week in the build up to BIRC. Look in reality i am not bothered about my positon in 14 days time but am looking for a solid race and to enjoy the experience of a British and European Championship.

I even considered pulling out a few days ago purely because i am so far from where i wanted to be. That may sound defeatist but its the truth. It is mainly an ego thing and i am the first to admit it.

Why? Because when i planned this out in November after my long lay off i had 19 weeks planned out but didn’t plan for the weeks missed and the injurys along the way – the end result should have been a PB. That PB still wouldn’t have got me a medal (Winner already decided but will be tight for 2nd 3rd and 4th) so i am not bothered about that, but it would have been a step in the right direction leading in to summer’s training.

Anyway!

Sunday to Wednesday was spent on exercise in the field living off little and sh*t food with little to no sleep, especially on Tuesday night.
Got home late on Wednesday and threw myself into training on Thursday with a stinking cold and feeling very run down.

First session was a basic 3 x 8 AT session with 5 min rest. All went nice and straight forward at 1.43(6) @ 26.

On Friday i went out with a 8 x 1 AN 1 min rest, all evenly paced after 5-6 hard strokes and were all around 1.30 (the last set an all out blast around 1.29) with the final average hitting 1.30(2). PB and happy but felt like sh*t in the afternoon.

Today (Sunday) still feeling groggy I tried something new. Because i am still guessing my 2k pace i did a tester and went for a 1500m race but with no sprint finish – the idea being the would have been 500m to go but without killing myself.

2 errors so was massively pissed off (but a learning experience)

1) Went off far to hard for far to long!
2) Settled to much for 4-5 strokes and then had to work harder than i wanted to pull back the average.

Outcome – finished around 6.20 pace but lactic had built up massively in my legs and arms so would have been hanging on rather than sprinting the finish had it been a 2k.

However i blame the fact that i went off to hard and the build up of lactic was to steep to cope with. Also i should have never let the average drift so much with a few very weak strokes. In reality going off a touch slower should have kept that at bay so that i was a tiny bit stronger to work the average down in the final push.

All assumption of course – time will tell!

1 more week of 3 x hard pieces then a small taper if at all, mainly working on sprints and some race plans.

Never say die! Dont write me off just yet!
