BIRC preparation begins (with a PB)

17 November 2013

It’s been 10 days since the last race and the build up to BIRC is now underway but with a slightly different approach this week.

I was feeling pretty wiped out in the days after racing and was back in the Q Lab for some more gas exchange testing which involved the usual row to failure test. That and the hint of a sniffle told me to back off for a few days this week.  The backing off lasted most of the week and I stuck to a few distance UT2 hr capped rows plus a few visits to the weights room.

My best effort at 70% HRR was:-

18km @ 1.51.4 r18

Yesterday it was time to test and improve on some speed as we begin the 2 week build up to BIRC (the final week no doubt will be a taper). I went into the session unsure of if I would have lost any pace having stuck to the low rate distance rows all week plus the re-introduction of DOMS in the lats and quads.  I was pleasantly surprised with a session PB:-

4x750m [3r] 1.30.6 r34

A nice confidence booster given that I dropped and changed so much of this weeks training. Going into next week we will start to ramp it up again and try and bring on a peak ready for BIRC.

Until then train hard, rest harder.
