Feeding my ego – AT training

19 July 2015

Another week and weekend ticked off in the surge for getting home.

Unfortunately weekends at sea aren’t the quickest and with a lot of time on my hands this weekend it was hard not to push too hard, being that it is the end of the weight training de-load week. Some light leg work with higher reps yesterday and a pump through the shoulders this morning set me up for another erg session this evening.

I wanted a decent workout, but without the overload of a maximal session, so opted for a rate capped session in the sort of AT type area. 4x1km with a 5 minute rest, rate capped at 28 seemed to fit the bill quite nicely and I think I enjoyed it more than my training partner who is new to using the rowing machine and is still unsure on pacing. I tried to advise him at the beginning, but soon sat back and watched him die a slow death.

It’s amazing how unique rowing is and to watch a big, fit, strong, power house of a man pull times that I would associate with r18 70% work is both humbling yet also quite amusing. I find that non rowers tend to have 2 speeds on the rowing machine – max effort or survival mode. There is no in between ground or slowing of rate and when the wheels come off, they come off in spectacular fashion!

One good thing is it makes me look really quick in comparison and is a nice ego boost to keep me getting back on the machine in attempt to put something together that resembles training in a bid to find some old speed.

4x1km [5r] r28 – 1.39.6

Sea state still a bit lumpy and unstable at the moment, hopefully it settles for next weeks big lifts.

Thanks for reading.
