Leave your ego at the door ….

5 January 2014

Well it’s been a frustrating week but experience has helped me to remain patient.

After coming down with a head cold on New Years day I ended up sitting on the side lines for 3 straight days. I was close to climbing the walls come Friday especially as the Q-Power training reports where coming in thick and fast and I contemplated heading out for a row but managed to sit it out and continue resting.

Yesterday I got the instructions to row out a light 8km or so and then stick in some 1 minute blasts.  As expected very uncomfortable and heavy in the 1 minutes and unable to recover swiftly. It’s amazing how the body can lose it’s ‘on the surface’ fitness in a few weeks of broken training and 3 days of being sedentary plus an illness to fight off.

Today was 750 day at Q-Power but still feeling groggy and with concern of going backwards before I can move forward I decided to repeat the same session rather than ask the body to be put under massive amounts of physical stress.

It is also amazing how quickly the body can adapt in 24 hours. Much the same pace over 30 minutes but the 1 minute bursts felt slightly more fluid and breathing settled easier.

The next few weeks will be slow as I look to regain pace day by day and find some form. Again experience shows that pace is somewhat irrelevant and it is all about putting the body in the correct training zone and then ensure I get the required rest to adapt. ‘Leave your ego at the door and do the session’ was the advice I gave a team member earlier today – it’s now time to put down some solid training and listen to my own advice.
