Why it is crucial to warm up

31 August 2012

A nice morning yesterday getting some distance in at low rate, 15k @18 was on the schedule broken down into 3x5k.  Pacing was ok and consistent, a much better day for erging, although warm not so muggy and a clearish sky.  After that I was dragged down the farm with Mrs Oz to help her with her horses – she has two and spends her life doing erm horsey type things.  Fine by me as I can get my training done it’s just every now and then I get the pleasure of helping her carry out really fun tasks.

Yesterdays fun task was an hour and a half of picking up horse s*** from a 5 acre field – told you it was fun.  However the main problem is today I have got DOMS in my hamstrings from bending down repetitively.

Erging – no problem

Picking up horse crap – DOMS!

Anyway had a moan at that this morning when I woke up to which Mrs Oz found lightly amusing then into today session which was 4x2km @ rate 24 (5 min rests) HR capped at 85% HRR.

An enjoyable session really.  Dragged the erg out of the garage into the fresh air and set off on a 5km war up with 3 bursts – felt good.  Into the session and legs suffered a little bit in the first set. HR was restricted because of the cap but the low rate felt heavy on the legs – mainly quads.  That is the highest I have rated all week (24) so all low rate work thus far and I felt it somewhat, but only in sets 1 and 2 when the pace was faster.

First set was 6.40 then had to back off the pace to keep the HR in its cap but a nice session. Took an ice bath after an extended cool down – hoping for less heavy legs for tomorrows short tempo piece in the morning and then I will round the week of with another distance row in the evening.

Tip of the day – ‘warm up thoroughly before picking up horse muck’.
