It’s a question worth asking.
Not to criticise. Not to take shots.
Just to explore it properly.
Has leadership changed?
And if it has … has it gone too soft?
I joined the Royal Marines in 2005.
Leadership was very different.
Direct. Clear. Often aggressive.
You were told what to do and you did it.
No explanation. No discussion.
And for the environment we operated in, it worked.
It had to.
People reacted differently to it.
Some thrived. Some didn’t.
I was comfortable with it. I understood the role, the expectation and the standard required.
But that environment had context.
It was built for a specific purpose.
Fast forward to leaving the military and stepping into professional football.
Completely different world.
I walked in thinking the Royal Marines background would carry weight.
That it would earn respect straight away.
It didn’t.
Most of the players didn’t know or care what the Royal Marines was.
And rightly so.
It wasn’t relevant to them.
That forced a change.
Quickly.
I had to earn trust.
Not through authority.
Through humility.
Through consistency.
Through leading by example.
Different environment. Different people. Different approach.
Same underlying requirement.
Leadership that works.
“Leadership isn’t fixed. It has to adapt to the environment it operates in.”
Which brings us back to the question.
Has leadership gone too soft?
Or has it simply evolved?
Because in today’s world, aggressive, directive leadership without context doesn’t land in the same way.
People expect communication. Clarity. Engagement.
They expect to understand why.
But there’s another side to this.
In adapting leadership, have we lost something?
Standards. Accountability. Expectation.
“If everything becomes acceptable, nothing is held to a standard.”
That’s where the conversation gets interesting.
Because leadership isn’t just about how you speak to people.
It’s about how you operate.
How you show up.
What you model every day.
And this is where health comes in.
Because leading by example is not a phrase.
It’s visible.
Energy. Presence. Composure under pressure. Consistency.
All of it is influenced by how well you are looking after yourself.
“You can’t ask for high standards if you’re not operating at one yourself.”
If you’re fatigued, stressed and running at capacity constantly, that shows.
In how you communicate.
In how you make decisions.
In how you lead.
So whether leadership is softer or not…
The real question is whether it is effective.
And effectiveness still comes back to the same thing.
Standards.
Trust.
And the ability to perform under pressure.
Which is why health cannot sit outside of leadership.
It sits right at the centre of it.
“Leadership without capacity is just responsibility without control.”
So where do you stand on it?
Has leadership gone too soft…
Or has it just changed?
