I hear it all the time.
“I’m burnt out because work is relentless.”
Maybe.
But I don’t think workload is the real issue.
Because workload has always existed.
Pressure has always existed.
Responsibility has always existed.
Senior leadership roles were never supposed to be easy.
Running companies. Leading teams. Managing risk. Delivering results.
That comes with pressure.
It always has.
And it always will.
So why are more leaders now talking about burnout than ever before?
In my opinion, it’s not because workload suddenly increased beyond human capability.
It’s because capacity has dropped.
That’s the difference people are missing.
“Burnout isn’t always caused by workload. Often it’s caused by low capacity.”
When health is unmanaged, capacity drops quietly.
Sleep quality deteriorates.
Recovery becomes inconsistent.
Stress accumulates.
Nutrition slips.
Movement disappears.
Alcohol increases.
Caffeine replaces recovery.
Then leaders try to operate at the same level they always have…
With a system that can no longer support it.
That’s when problems start.
Not because the workload changed.
Because the person carrying it did.
And the dangerous part is this often becomes normal.
People adapt to poor energy.
They adapt to brain fog.
They adapt to waking up tired.
They adapt to operating permanently in survival mode.
“Most leaders don’t realise their capacity has dropped because the decline happens slowly.”
Then eventually they hit a wall.
And the conclusion becomes:
“It’s the workload.”
But if workload was the sole cause, every leader would burn out.
Every business owner would collapse.
Every parent balancing life and work would fail.
Yet some people continue to perform consistently under huge pressure.
Why?
Usually because they protect capacity better.
They recover properly.
They manage stress better.
They maintain standards around health, even when life is busy.
This is why health matters so much in leadership.
Not as a wellbeing perk.
As a performance requirement.
“The workload rarely disappears. The solution is increasing capacity.”
At Warrior Wellness Movement, this is exactly what we focus on.
Not removing pressure.
That’s unrealistic.
We focus on improving the ability to operate under pressure consistently without slowly degrading physically, mentally and emotionally.
Because pressure itself is not the enemy.
Unmanaged health under pressure is.
So before blaming workload…
It’s worth asking yourself a harder question.
Has your capacity quietly dropped over the years without you noticing?
