The middle 10 wobbles – 30r20 PB

4 November 2013

A nice start to the training week today with a double session but not without the daily training and performance mind game lottery.

All weekend I have been eyeing up todays session and spent most of the morning relaxed and confident.  However an hour before training I got the usual ‘pre hard piece’ lethargic feeling and started to think of lowering my target. I even thought about cruising for 10 minutes then increasing the pace in the final two thirds.

However after a 5km warm up the focused mind returned and it was time to get down to business – the 30r20. I set off sitting on last weeks PB split and held it well for 10 minutes, then came the mental toughness game and the middle 10 wobbles. I knew if I could make it to the last 10 in reasonable shape I could start counting down the minutes in groups of 20 strokes. After a few moments of back and forth I kept coming back fighting refusing to surrender and let the average split drift too far away from PB pace knowing I wouldn’t have much in the tank to draw it back come the final few minutes.  Driving home in the final moments in the usual suffocation and pain I was glad to finish and take the PB.

A few hours rest and refuel then back into the weights room for some pushing activity.  Didn’t see the point of trashing the posterior chain or quads any further so opted for some under used muscle groups.  Want to be able to move come Thursdays racing.

A good days training.
