So can I officially call myself a rower now?!
Went out for my first session on Wed afternoon for 90 mins at Dart Totnes RC and have fell in love!
Went out in a double with an experienced friend and excellent coach to attempt the unknown! Didn’t feel like a total beginner as I had the basics weighed off but was presented with the challenge of getting the blades in and out of the water at the right depth and all the other rowing jargon my coach kept shouting at me!
We started in the erg room which was situated next to the bar with around 15 ergs all lined up over looking the river (an absolute dream!). Looked at my technique which was deemed acceptable and got told a few commands.
Then we lifted the boat to the water and waded out to shin depth (negative wellies – mental note to self – take wellies next time!) Damn cold and painful on my feet so was keen to get in the boat sharpish. My initial fears were of falling in having tested the water temperature on my feet and thinking ‘if I go in, I am in the sh*t – big time!’
I was pleasantly surprised how stable it actually was bearing in mind I am rather clumsy sometimes and so I settled quickly.
After doing arms only, back and arms, quarter slide etc my first major problem was clearing the handle over my large quads on the recovery without the blades striking the water! However, I then decided I am probably small compared to most rowers so I must be doing it wrong!
After a while of stringing a few strokes together it was time to try feathering the blades – but soon went back to square blades!
Time was ticking (had to leave sharpish to pick my boy up from nursery) just as I was getting into it and was learning to slow down the recovery and caress the blades into the water and pro long the finish – this probably sounds all wrong and ridiculous to you rowers but I know what I mean!
As i left the senior team were turning up ready for a 5k test which tempted me but couldn’t as i had to leave for family duties. Maybe next time with more warning! (Arrogantly i was sure i would have been the quickest, having seen the fastest time the next day of low 17 minutes).
Pissed wet through, freezing cold but all in all absolutely loved it. Going out again next week and plan to get OTW regularly now.
Ps Back is hit and miss, managed 2 sessions OTE so far this week, heading to the gym now for session 3. Will blog on Sunday results.
